Your first dance is an exciting time for you and your bride/groom! Picking a song that speaks for both of you could be easy or difficult to figure out. Some people choose a meaningful song that was playing when you first met, others choose a song that has meaningful lyrics that speak true to the relationship. Whatever you choose, make sure it's a song that you both love and will enjoy listening to as well as dancing to.
Here are some suggestions of songs that I LOVE not only to listen to, but I think they definitely get the message across. Some are a little more serious than the others but each is definitely a contender.
Bones - Michael Kiwanuka
I close my eyes and I can see this song playing while a couple dances outdoors during a lovely spring/summer reception. Maybe somewhere downtown or near the beach?! I see in my head, strands of lights above the couple as they stare into each other's eyes... (I daydream a lot obviously) It's such a beautiful song and soulfully sung by Michael Kiwanuka.
Let It Be Me - Ray LaMontagne
This song is all about having someone there for you even through the toughest of situations. He's pleading for you to choose him to be that pillar/friend you need. He's singing about real love and hurt. I know that it's not for everyone to have a song that edges on slightly depressing but it's just a truly lovely song when you really think about it. Again, another soulful singer that I absolutely love.
What I Wouldn't Do - A Fine Frenzy
THIS. Such a fun upbeat song!! A great diddy if you want a little more of an upbeat song to dance to and enjoy with you guests and of course the one you love. Definitely makes me want to dance a little jig! haha.
XO - John Mayer (Cover of a Beyonce original)
Now, I love Queen B but I love John Mayer's stripped down version of this song. I feel like it gives a completely different feel to this song - It almost sounds a little more sincere this way. The sentiments I mean. It's a great song to listen to while you stare into the eyes of each other and begin to dance the night away.
Not With Haste - Mumford & Sons
This has got to be one of the sweetest songs that Mumford and Sons has on either of their albums. It's beautiful. I almost wonder if Marcus Mumford wrote it for his wife Maggie Mulligan... I really enjoy the use of the banjo in this song too. A great slow song that eventually speeds up a little in the middle to the end (the Mumford way to create a song! haha).
Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
It may seem cheesy, but I don't care. THIS SONG IS GREAT. I have had this song in my library since Keane made it on to the scene here in the states. My friend Mariah and I have formed an unhealthy relationship with this song. "So why don't we go, somewhere only we know...."
You & Me - Dave Matthews Band
Ever since I heard this song on the radio, I had to get it. It's a sweet song from the great Dave Matthews Band. Dave Matthews has been a staple in the cds and mp3 players of many college students and now young professionals who grew up on their music. So, I think its appropriate that a song of theirs is on this list.
Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop - Landon Pigg
I'm pretty sure this song was used in a commercial... and then I looked it up immediately after hearing it. This would be a pretty PERFECT song if you did meet at a coffee shop.... haha. But I enjoy the cool 70's and indie vibe that comes from listening to this song. The various instruments definitely give the song various layers and a cool sound.
Something - The Beatles.
Ok. So I've loved The Beatles basically since the beginning of my existence. My parents have videos of my brothers and I dancing (Some is mostly my face because I was a camera hog) and The Beatles were definitely on the playlist along with Bruce Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel and Billy Joel. This song written by George Harrison is so simple yet beautiful.
En Via En Rose - Louis Armstrong
Louis Armstrong is also another on the Brown family rotation of music listened to in the car from Georgia to New York. This is a classic love song. A great slow dance, a great length (so you're not dancing forever but just long enough for the photographer to get great photos and for you to truly enjoy the moment). And the face that Louis is making in the video preview is pretty awesome. haha.
I hope that I have suggested something that you can use to get the ball rolling on a great first dance song. It's a wonderful moment for you and your love that you will remember forever. It's a song that will ignite great memories for you and your friends/family when they hear it. (Not to add pressure. hehe) Enjoy!!
