One of my most popular blog posts is one that I made with song suggestions for brides and grooms to use for their first dance. I love being able to use my love for music to provide song selections for my other love - wedding photography. I try to choose songs that I like to listen to (duh), but also songs that might be a little different. Many of these songs are ones that I feel are either fun & entertaining or sweet & loving. When choosing a first dance song, a lot of couples use a song that they either heard a lot while they were dating or a meaningfiul song to their relationship. With music always changing and evolving, I would definitely have a lot of trouble trying to narrow down the choices to just one. Seriously... I'm not sure how I would choose. It would probably have to come out to be some weird mash-up of like 20 different songs..... then again, maybe not. hahaha. I can't talk from experience personally, I can really only talk from experience as someone who has witnessed at least 30 + first dances - choose a song that you love; one that you never tire of. One that reminds you of the person you love and the feelings that you have towards that person. This should be the song that you choose. THE first dance song.
Here are a few of my suggestions:
Stevie Wonder - At Last
I had NO IDEA that this song even existed until it randomly popped up on my spotify one day. This is one of the reasons that I love listening to either spotify radio or some random person's playlist on any streaming website - I always find some new music to add to my personal playlists or to share with others! This is a GREAT rendition of the Etta James classic in the style that we all love from Stevie Wonder. You could definitely have fun with this as your choice.
Shut Up & Dance With Me - Walk the Moon
The first time that I ever heard this song I was actually shooting a wedding. Now, the couple did not use this song as their first dance, but it definitely had all the guests up and dancing. This is a faster, upbeat song but definitely a energy booster if you want to start the evening off with a bang!
You've Made Me So Very Happy - Blood, Sweat & Tears
I know, I know... You're probably thinking, what is Marianne thinking?!! Now, I've liked this song for a long time. Seriously. I got a cd once that had a bunch of 1960's tunes (an era of music that I can't get enough of) and I've always enjoyed this song. From the awesome electric organ playing to the emotional grunts and yelling (I mean, he really loves her!)... It's got all you need for a first dance that people will remember for years. Trust me on this.
I Believe in a Thing Called Love - The Darkness
I was in high school when this song first came out and I still rock out to it. This song makes me want to get up and just start dancing!! This will have your guests laughing and dancing right along with you. Because, you can't just sit during this one - especially because you can show off those awesome air guitar skills you've been secretly practicing.
I Will - The Beatles
(Don't judge me on the quality of this video please!! The song sounds a lot better, I promise!)
I love The Bealtes. I have for a long time and I always will. This is a sweet and short song that would make for a great slow first dance. It definitely sings of all those lovely things that you want in a first dance song. Sweet and simple.
Cheek to Cheek - Frank Sinatra
Another fun one!! I love Frank. His voice is so smooth and charming. This song has great times in it where you could dance slow and fast. Everyone loves frank, so I'm sure all your guests will be tuning in for your first dance when their hear the horns and percussions start off this magical number while you dance under the stars and twinkle lights. Sigh... So lovely.
The World As I See It - Jason Mraz
Jason Mraz is kind of my guilty pleasure when it comes to artists. I own all of his albums and probably listen to them a little more that one should, but I just can't help it. "It's not hard for me to love you, oh I really love you..." This song is the perfect one to cuddle up to your new partner in life and just dance the night away. It's calm and just easy to listen to. Maybe a first dance on the beach or somewhere tropical?? I don't know... just dreaming here as I listen to Mr. Mraz.
Shelter - Ray LaMontagne
Warning: this song is slow. But it's slow and lovely all at the same time. Listen to those lyrics, and that grit in his man's voice. If you're looking for a song to wrap up all the struggles/the ups and downs that you as a couple may of had during your relationship - this the one that I suggest hands down. Ray's music transports it's listeners into a different world - one where he points out the truth in the world but that love is what conquers all and will help you get through all the bad that's out there. I feel like I just went REALLY DEEP with that explanation... I "blame" it on the fact that I'm currently listening to this song while typing this. Plus, Ray is a man that rocks an awesome beard. If that's something you're into...? haha.
That Girl - Justin Timberlake
Justin Timberlake. That should be all I have to say about this song. He's pretty amazing at writing songs that everyone these days can listen to and enjoy. This song is just perfect at getting you into the right mind-set and mood for a night of good music and partying. It's sentimental without being over the top and it's modern. I'm kind of surprised that I haven't heard it at any weddings... Cause I would be out their swaying with my camera if it came on. (Not joking)
Strawberry Swing - Coldplay
Again... I'm sure you're like - Marianne, what? This is the Coldplay song you choose out of the many they have created?!! To that I simply say - Just listen to the lyrics. I mean they say "It's such a perfect day" about a million times. I think that sentiment alone should be exactly what people want from their wedding day. For everything to go as planned with no stress and not a care in the world - aka perfect.
I hope that some of these suggestions help some of you while you plan your wedding day playlist. I know this is only a small part of the wedding day, but sometimes its the only time during the day when you're "alone" with your partner on the wedding day. This is the time you get to really say "Hi" and let the music really get you into the right mindset for the rest of the evening or even the rest of your marriage. The right song coule really make a difference in these moments.
"Where words leave off, music begins."
"Marianne was amazing! She captured our big day perfectly! ... Not to mention every photograph was absolutely gorgeous! I would highly recommend her for any type of wedding!"
"Every moment captured! ... I could not have even imagined my wedding pictures better than these! If you want the most brilliant, magical, priceless, and special photos of one of the best days of your life...choose Marianne Lucille Photography!"
"Just got my box with my wedding pictures in it. You have out done yourself once again! The pictures are amazing and the delivery made me cry! Couldn't of hired a better photographer! Thanks again."
