Family portraits are one of the most meaningful parts of your wedding day — they’re the photos you’ll frame, gift, and treasure for years to come. But they can also be one of the most hectic parts of the day if there’s no plan in place! As a Savannah wedding photographer, I’ve seen how a little bit of preparation can make this part of your day smooth, quick, and even fun.
1. Create a Family Photo List
Before your wedding, make a list of the family groupings that are important to you. This helps your photographer know exactly who needs to be photographed — and ensures no one is left out.
Be sure to include names and relationships (for example: “Bride with Mom and Dad – Susan and Mark” or “Groom with siblings – Jake and Emily”). This keeps everything organized and allows your photographer to easily call out who’s next.
2. Start with the Largest Groups First
Begin your list with your biggest groupings — such as full family photos — and then work your way down to smaller combinations. This helps us manage time efficiently and allows people to step away once their photos are done instead of waiting around.
3. Prioritize Older Relatives and Young Children
If you have grandparents, elderly family members, or little ones in your photos, plan to have them photographed early in the sequence. That way, they won’t have to stand for long or wait in the heat (especially important for outdoor weddings here in Savannah!).
4. Communicate with Family Ahead of Time
Make sure everyone on your list knows when and where to be for portraits — whether that’s before the ceremony or immediately after. A quick heads-up or group message before the wedding day helps avoid confusion and keeps everything running smoothly.
5. Trust Your Photographer’s Process
Once your list is ready and everyone knows where to go, your job is done. I’ll handle organizing, posing, and keeping the photos moving quickly so you can get back to celebrating.
