If you’re dreaming of a romantic, light-filled downtown Savannah engagement session, Nellie and Sam’s afternoon was the perfect example of why fall is pure magic here in the Hostess City.
As a Savannah wedding photographer, I always tell my couples — the historic squares in the fall just hit differently. The light softens, the Spanish moss glows, and every corner of downtown feels timeless.
Starting in Lafayette Square
We began their engagement session in Lafayette Square, one of the most iconic and romantic squares in the historic district. With the breathtaking Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist nearby, Lafayette Square offers that perfect blend of Southern charm, architecture, and lush greenery.
The oak trees were draped in Spanish moss, and the fall light filtered through in the dreamiest way. This square is one of my favorite locations for engagement photos in Savannah because it feels classic, elegant, and unmistakably Savannah.
Monterey Square & Historic Architecture
From there, we made our way to my personal favorite square — Monterey Square.
Monterey Square feels quiet and intimate, making it ideal for couples who want romantic, natural moments without heavy foot traffic. The massive oaks create a canopy overhead, and the Spanish moss adds that soft, romantic texture Savannah is known for.
The surrounding historic buildings truly set this square apart — especially the old Alex Raskin Building. I love its textured walls and timeless character. It adds depth and an editorial feel to photos while still staying true to Savannah’s historic charm.
Nellie and Sam looked completely at ease here — laughing, strolling hand in hand, and soaking in the beauty of downtown Savannah together.
Golden Hour at Forsyth Park
As golden hour approached, we headed to Forsyth Park, and the light was absolute perfection.
Fall engagement sessions in Savannah are known for their soft, glowing warmth, and this evening did not disappoint. The open greenspace, the tree-lined walkways, and that dreamy sunset glow created some of the most romantic moments of the entire afternoon.
I was even able to capture a few aerial drone shots, which gave us a breathtaking perspective of downtown Savannah from above. Seeing Nellie and Sam framed by the trees and historic landscape added such a cinematic touch to their engagement gallery.
Camellias & A Sweet Ending
On our way back to the cars, the camellias were calling my name — and I’ve learned to always trust Savannah when it shows off.
We stopped for what we thought would be just a few quick photos, but those frames ended up being some of my favorites from the entire session. The soft blooms paired with the golden fall light created the most romantic, natural portraits.
Sometimes the unplanned stops become the most meaningful moments.
Counting Down to Their Wedding at The Landings
I absolutely cannot wait to celebrate Nellie and Sam again this fall at The Landings. If their engagement session is any indication, their wedding day is going to be filled with warmth, joy, and so much genuine love.
