There is just something magical about an October wedding in Savannah. The light is golden, the air feels perfect, and the city absolutely glows — and Megan and Smith’s wedding day was the perfect example of why fall is such a dream season to get married here.
As a Savannah wedding photographer, this day had everything I love most: waterfront views, historic charm, meaningful details, and an unforgettable celebration from start to finish.
Getting Ready & First Look at The Westin Harbor Savannah
Megan and Smith began their wedding day at The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, overlooking the Savannah River with breathtaking views of the downtown skyline.
They chose to do a private first look at the gazebo, and it was such a sweet, emotional moment. They exchanged personal vows and gifts before the ceremony, giving themselves intentional time alone before the day unfolded. I always encourage couples to build in this quiet space — it allows you to truly be present with each other before everything begins.
The waterfront setting created the most romantic backdrop, blending coastal elegance with classic Savannah charm.
Downtown Savannah Portraits by Trolley
After their first look, we hopped on a trolley and made our way into historic downtown Savannah for portraits in some of my favorite hidden spots.
There’s nothing quite like pairing waterfront views with the historic squares draped in Spanish moss. The soft October light filtering through the oak trees gave their portraits that timeless, dreamy feel Savannah is known for.
We captured couples portraits first, then welcomed the wedding party and family to join before heading to the ceremony.
A Classic Ceremony at First Baptist Church
Megan and Smith were married at First Baptist Church of Savannah, located just off beautiful Chippewa Square.
The ceremony was heartfelt, traditional, and full of joy. Every guest felt the emotion in the room as they officially became husband and wife.
And their exit? Absolutely iconic.
Guests lined the church steps for an epic petal toss as Megan and Smith ran through a shower of florals into a vintage Ford waiting at the bottom of the steps. It was one of those cinematic Savannah moments that feels straight out of a movie.
Waterfront Cocktail Hour & Sunset Portraits
Cocktail hour took place back at The Westin along the Savannah River, with River Street showing off across the water.
The views were stunning, the cocktails were flowing, and the atmosphere was effortlessly elegant. As the sun began to set, we snuck away for a few golden hour portraits on the docks — and even captured some incredible drone images with the skyline glowing behind them.
Sunset on the Savannah River never disappoints.
Meaningful Details: A Tribute to Marley
One of my favorite elements from their wedding was the subtle tribute to their dog, Marley. They incorporated Marley throughout the day in the sweetest ways — from koozies to cake details to their signature cocktail: a “Salty Dog.” They chose that cocktail because Marley loves spending time on the water (with a little attitude to match), and because they had dinner at The Salty Dog the night they got engaged.
Those personal touches are what make a wedding feel truly intentional. It’s not just about beautiful design — it’s about telling your story.
A Reception to Remember
The celebration truly kicked into high gear thanks to the incredible Emerald Empire Band. From the first dance to the final song, the dance floor stayed packed all night long.
Live music always brings a different level of energy to a reception, and this one was no exception. It was the perfect mix of elegance and all-out fun.
The Most Incredible Boat Send-Off
To close out the night, Megan and Smith had an unforgettable exits — a boat send-off on the Savannah River.
With River Street glowing in the background and their guests cheering from the dock, they sailed off into the night in true Savannah style. It was romantic, iconic, and such a unique way to end an already incredible day.
A Seamless Wedding Day
A huge thank you to Elegant Savannah Weddings for coordinating such a smooth, stress-free day. Having an experienced planner who knows Savannah venues inside and out makes all the difference for both couples and vendors.
